Winning with Superlatives: Dot and Gulp

My favorite Nokia films from the past year are undeniably Dot and Gulp. Unlike traditional ads where the goal is to push products at any cost, these two videos are pieces of art that subtly communicate what the product is capable of. The product being, in this case, the Nokia N8 smart phone with its superb 12 megapixel camera and HD video capabilities.

Dot, the world's smallest stop-motion animation, came out August 21st, 2010. A year later, the film has won numerous awards and has been watched over 2.8 million times on YouTube. Just two weeks after its launch, Gulp, Dot's follower and the world's largest stop-motion animation, has already been viewed nearly a million times.

It's safe to say both of these videos have gone viral and will probably continue to be shared, even if in lesser degree, for years to come. I find it quite special in this day and age that there are viral videos that are in no way scandalous or offensive. Mainstream interest and global appeal at the time of fragmented audiences and niche content - that's something to celebrate.
